For “Noi Siamo Invece” (We Are Instead), I started from a feeling, a question: what happens when a son or daughter, growing up, is forced to confront the outside world, others, and life itself?
I wanted the characters to navigate this transition by measuring themselves against love. In his preface to “Fragments of a Lover’s Discourse,” Roland Barthes reminds us that “The discourse of love today is extremely solitary. This discourse is perhaps spoken by thousands of individuals (who can say?), but it is supported by no one (…) or it is ignored, devalued, mocked, cut off not only from power but also from its mechanisms (science, art, knowledge).”
Noi Siamo Invece addresses this exclusion and the resulting loneliness, comparing characters and cultural conformities.
I wanted to observe the dynamics that develop between the characters and how, over time, they end up becoming chronic.
The play follows Lara’s journey, her uncertain and contradictory progress in her attempt to escape solitude. I was interested in accompanying her towards a new awareness: no longer feeling
the victim of a family legacy that leaves no escape, but also recognizing herself in pain, the architect of her own choices.
