In “Re Chicchinella” (King Chicchinella), written and directed by Emma Dante, I play the Princess.
The show is based on one of the fairy tales from Giambattista Basile’s “Lo cunto de li cunti” (The Tale of the Tales) and concludes Emma Dante‘s exploration of the visionary universe of the Campanian writer.
Through a language both cruel and poetic, grotesque and folksy, Re Chicchinella explores human desires, hunger, loneliness, and greed.
At the center of the story is a sick king, inhabited by a mysterious animal that slowly consumes him from the inside, while around him the court continues to await the golden eggs his body produces.
What interests me about this work is the way the fairy tale manages to allow comedy and tragedy, deformity and tenderness, to coexist, allowing something profoundly human to emerge beneath the baroque excess.
