In “Hospes,–itis,” through a writing that intertwines intimacy and the collective dimension, theater becomes a space for confronting illness, healing, and loss.
In his director’s notes, Davide Iodice writes: “I reread Hospes,–itis in this dystopian time in which the pandemic has confined us, and the thrill that poetry always evokes is joined by the shock of a present that transcends all metaphor. Author Fabio Pisano certainly could not have imagined—no one could—the mournful accompaniment of these days, the deaths of the elderly in nursing homes, the air hunger.”
What interests me about this work is the way a story manages to open up to something broader, collective, and historical, allowing the fragility of bodies and the human need for closeness to emerge.
“We are not in a game or a piece of theater. No. This is life.”
